Intentional Eating: 5 Ways to Tune into your Body

With our busy work schedules, families, and the many demands that life presents, we don’t have much time to eat, let alone eat healthy and with intention. It can be a challenge to ask busy individuals to really think about the food they eat on a daily basis. I know the struggles first hand. I’m a Physician Assistant who works in a stressful medical environment where the hours are long and the breaks are seldom. But the fact is, if we don’t make a conscious effort to put nourishing foods into our bodies, we will have to live with many chronic ailments, including symptoms of inflammation, food allergies, excess weight, fatigue, disease and emotional problems. We may even shorten our lives. If we eat with intention though, we can give our bodies a fighting chance in a toxic world. Here are some tips that I use to help myself eat more consciously:

1. Think about what the food you are choosing is doing for your body: Is this food serving a higher purpose? Is it providing you with the proper nutrients, or is it just a filler food you reach for out of boredom or stress? So many of us are on auto-pilot these days. When we drive, when we work, and when we eat. So next time you reach for food, ask yourself, what is this food doing for me? The first step of intentional eating is to Be Aware.

2. Shop smart: Most of us don’t have a lot time to grocery shop. So it can be a challenge to read labels and really understand what you are buying. But it’s important to make smart choices because health starts with what you buy. Give yourself just an extra half-hour at the grocery store to read labels. Know what is in your food! A short list of things to avoid: GMOs, preservatives, added sugar, hydrogenated ingredients, and harmful vegetable oils like soybean, cottonseed, and sunflower oil.

3. Try cooking at home, even if it just one night a week: There is nothing more intentional than cooking the food you eat. You get to be in control of everything that goes into your food. And that is actually a very empowering thing! Even if you only have time to cook one night on the weekend, try it! Try a recipe you’ve always wanted to make, and make it fun by cooking with others or for others. When you cook you put love and effort into your food, which makes eating it more enjoyable.

4. Sit down, and chew your food: I know it sounds silly, but sit down when you eat. I used to eat in the morning while standing in the kitchen because I was in such a hurry to get to work. I’m pretty sure I barely chewed my food. Now I get up ten minutes earlier. Just ten minutes! I do this so I can sit down and eat breakfast and really chew/taste my food. Or if you don’t eat breakfast, sit down a few nights a week for dinner.

5. Do your research: I find that the more I read about and research nutrition, the more I enjoy eating and the smarter my choices become. You know that McDonalds is bad for you, but why? You know that kale is good for you, but why? What is it in kale that is good for you? How does it work in the body to help it run smoothly? The Internet is a source for a wealth of knowledge. Learn about your food. Instead of watching that last TV show, take some time to research the nutrients found in spinach, and what those nutrients do for you. Knowledge is power!

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: Eat the Love You Feel

It’s Valentine’s day in Bohemia, and I’m prepping for a romantic evening with my favorite special someone.

I spent a week visiting my super boho sister in San Francisco last spring, and she took me to a cooking class that blew our Californian minds. It wasn’t the class or the bronzed babe who taught it that made it so unbelievable. It was the simple, secret ingredient she shared with us that changed the way I cook forever.

I love to pay it forward, so this Valentine’s day my gift to you goddesses is the gift that Californian Chef gave to me.

Step One: Be a gourmet guru with love on your brain

After my week in the valley, I started cooking with love. Let me be more specific. Every time I walked into my kitchen, I went in with love on my mind.  I chopped veggies, and remembered sweet moments I’d spent with loved ones. I pulled dense leaves from kale stems, thought about times I’d felt sparkly and considered the people or places that made me feel that way. Then, I splashed oil and seeds on top of those beautiful culinary creations and soaked up the love.

Step Two: Eat the Love You Feel

Once the chow is ready, it’s time to eat the love. The magic in preparing a dish with love on your brain is that you are literally eating the love you felt when you made it. Pretty rad! Sit down, take a breath and let the quality love and kindness sink in.

Step Three: Share the Love You Madelet love in mala

After I’ve really felt the love, my favorite thing to do is share it. Those who’ve found the deepest love know that giving means receiving, so share that love-filled grub with your best gal pal or your sweetest honey.

My sweetie just showed up, so I’m putting on my Let Love In Mala and thinking some loving thoughts. Tonight when you’re massaging kale and cutting up veg, remember the people in your life who make it easy to love.

The beginning of a new year is a wonderful time for renewal and the perfect opportunity to establish some new habits for a joyous 2014. Here are my top habits that don’t require any dieting, deprivation or denying yourself of any goodness whatsoever! All of these habits will set you on a permanent path joyous health.

Cook your own food.

One of the first questions I ask when consulting a new client is “do you like to cook?” and if they say no, then my next question is “are you willing to cook if this is going to ensure you reach your goals” and the answer is always “yes”. I ask this question because it often determines success or failure. Most of us do not have the financial freedom to hire someone to do all the cooking for us, but we can carve out time in our schedule to make our own food.

Cooking your own food is a fantastic way to improve your eating habits. When you cook your own food you are more likely to make healthy choices because you have more awareness of what you are putting in your body. If you are concerned that “healthy” means flavourless, then you just need some yummy inspiration, which leads joyously well into my next point.

Try one new recipe per week.

A simple way to get some motivation in the kitchen is to try out a new way to cook your favorite veggies, or find a vegetable or spice in the supermarket you’ve never eaten before and look up recipes that appeal to you. This is a great way to increase your vegetable intake, and it’s a fun way to introduce new foods! Give 20 second hugs.

The average hug lasts a measly 3 seconds! Hugging promotes the release of the love hormone, oxytocin. This lovely hormone eases anxiety, lowers blood pressure and heart rate. It also bonds people. Hugging is a great way to feel more connected with your loved ones. To ensure you have release of this love hormone make your hugs last, at least 20 seconds. You’ll be glad you did!

Dry skin brush.

The perfect way to feel rejuvenated and invigorated is to dry skin brush every single morning before you shower or take a bath. Dry skin brushing stimulates your lymphatic system, which is a network of vessels that exchange nutrients and pick up waste products from your circulatory system. When you dry skin brush, you enhance the removal of toxic waste products as well because your skin is your largest organ of detoxification. Plus it makes your skin GLOW!

Listen to Music

Just as minerals are essential to brain health, so is music. In fact, scientists have found that listening to music releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain linked to pleasure.

Music is great for kids too. Listening to music regularly before the age of 7 has a significant effect on the development of the brain a study published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggested.

You know how you feel when a great tune comes on the radio – joyous! You can listen to music anywhere – in the car, at the office or at home. It’s also a great way to enhance your workout! I highly recommend a daily dose of the music mineral.
