A Chat with Laura from Martini Yoga

LULU_WEB_2012Q2_CBTransitionFall_0836
What brought you to your mat for the first time?

At the time I didn’t know it, but I think what initially brought me to my mat during my college years was the need for self-love.  As a teenager I played sports and danced ballet.  Both of these physical activities were highly competitive and certainly contributed to my lack of self-esteem (along with the acne and BAD haircut).  Now when I arrive on my yoga mat, I remind myself that yoga is not a competition and if I’m having an off day, I won’t be judged for it.  In a world where we are constantly being told we are not enough, yoga allows me to find compassion for my authentic self.  I am whole and perfect just as I am.

What inspires you?

Elephants.  I love them and the fact that they are endangered breaks my heart.  A couple years ago I had a vivid dream about elephants being poorly treated at a circus so I started teaching community classes in order to sponsor 10 elephants at a nature park in Thailand.  Every time I get upset or frustrated about something petty in my life, I think of the elephants and what I can do to help support them more.  Putting my energy into bigger issues helps me gain a greater perspective on the world.

What advice do you have for all the yogis out there?

Practice compassion, let go of guilt, look at the world with child-like wonder, passionately invent your perfect career, pay attention to the way your mind works through the tools of meditation and yoga, eat

lots of dark chocolate, get into nature at least once a day, and remember, the greatest practice of yoga is self-observation without judgement.

What is your favourite mala and why?

My favourite mala is the Swarovski Illumination Mala because it represents healing and self-love.  I think that only when we love ourselves fully and freely can we then begin to radiate love outwards.  The mala reminds me how deeply we are all connected as we are all on the same path of healing and harmony.  When I lead yoga retreats, I do everything in my power to ensure that everyone in the group feels as loved, accepted, and empowered as possible in the time that we are together (even if I’ve never met them before!).  I believe that when people feel loved and appreciated, they shine.

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: My Top 3 Spring Must-Haves

Topspringmusthavetinydevotions

Hey Boho Beauties,

After ballet last week, a girlfriend of mine commented on the super soft, hot pink tights I’d worn to our power plié class.

“Those tights are unreal. You’ve got everything I want—I just can’t keep up,” she told me.  “How do you do it?”

We’d been stretching and twirling at this studio together for months now, and I’d never noticed she felt that way.

What she said sat with me for a while after I left, and it wasn’t until I hit the dark and leafies in the Whole Food’s produce section that it came to me. I DO have everything I want, but the pink tights had nothing to do with it.

I grabbed my kale and baby bok-choy, bee lined it to the cash and tried to hurry out of there to call my gal pal.

The line was thick at the till to pay, so my eyes scanned over the cash out’s trashy magazines. Their covers flashed the latest scandals, slim down tricks and ‘Spring Must-Haves’.

“Spring Must-Haves,” I thought to myself.  I paused and thought of my hot pink tights, having it all and my own personal Spring Must-Haves.

As soon as the cashier handed me my bags, I dialed up my girlfriend and spilled my personal Spring Must-Haves to her.

Here’s a hint: Must-Haves aren’t about having everything!

My Top 3 Spring Must-Haves

1.Child-Like Curiosity

Do you remember being little and dancing under the trees? Letting your head fall dangerously far back on the merry-go-round and eating so many pop rocks that your tongue went blue? It was a time when your dreams had no limits, and anything was possible.  Guess what? That time is still here! My Top Spring Must-Have is the memory of that child-like time, and ‘acting as if’. No matter what you’re wearing, or who you are with, that feeling is your greatest accessory.

2. A Warm Cup of Lemon Tea

This Must-Have is best used in the morning, before you’ve consumed anything else.  A warm cup of lemon tea or water soothes your internal organs and your soul. The best way to serve others is to first serve yourself. So start your day off right by cleaning your pipes and preparing your body for a sparkly day! You can drink detoxifying lemon tea at any time of the day to make your skin glow, help you sleep soundly and maintain inner and outer peace.

3. My Favorite Mala

tiny-devotions-mala-beads-awakening-malas-sandalwood-white-jade_large

As the seasons change, so too do our intentions. This is why keeping your favorite mala close to your heart is important for remembering meaningful dreams and intentions. I’m wearing my Awakening Mala as we move into spring to expand my dreams, dance like no one is watching and awaken all of the potential that lives within me.

Go grab your favorite mala, Boho bellas, and take some time to consider your own special Spring Must-Haves.

Our interview with Angela Leigh

971230_10102099047049788_559752014_nI am pretty sure in my past life I was a journalist as I love asking questions of those that inspire me. In fact, I love asking others what inspires them, drives them, lights them up, pulls at their heart strings and essentially what sets their soul on fire.

So, today, I answer a couple questions to see how the other shoe fits.

What brought you to the mat for the first time?

Stress. I was a big ball of anxiety. I was a young, ambitious, career-driven and emotionally-devoid woman who was subcounsciously craving a connection within myself that was clearly lacking. I was always looking outside for the answers…little did I know the answers were already within me. My soul sister, Suzy Nece, dragged me into the studio and within a few breaths & tears I was hooked. I uncovered an outlet to connect to myself in a way I hadn’t experienced before. I was able to turn off everything and be still, honest, raw, vulnerable and open to change. My practice is deeply special & personal…it is a mirror to my soul, it will never lie to me, it keeps me pure and focused.

How do you set intentions in life?

Intention evokes action.

Action creates change.

Change inspires growth.

Growth develops confidence.

Confidence trumps fear.

Fear loses to bravery.

Bravery is necessary to dream beyond what is comfortable.

I set intentions daily. To create pure intentions I changed my lens of life from fear to love. When I changed how I saw myself life became more clear, more fun and much more FULL.

Intentions are only as good as you are willing to take the actions to feel the change. And yes, that takes a leap of faith and probably a lot of courage. But I personally would rather feel the free fall than the safety of staleness.

1457522_10102495647269768_1405836728_n

What inspires me?

Vulnerability. I connect to authenticity. I respond to realness. I love hard. When the walls are down this heart opens up and it runs deep. That kind of connection truly inspires me to take action and create change. Our world is not going to fix itself. We need to share our stories, support one another and encourage everyone along the way.

What is your favorite mala & why?

Awakening Mala.

There is a purity of the mind, body and soul that needs to be aligned to create intentions and that purity comes from self-acceptance. Without that pure, unconditional love for ourselves it is challenging to overcome obstacles that stand in our way of our intentions. This mala awakens that purity. And I love all things PURE.

Ritual can be done anywhere, by anyone, and in any way with Jessica Cartwright

full_IMG_6179_edited-2Living in Montana provides a constant source of inspiration. There is so much natural beauty and an abundance of healthy, heart centered energy. It’s a wondrous thing to wake up every day in what the natives called the Valley of the Flowers. I feel immensely grateful to live here and do what I love – teach yoga, energy heal, get lost in nature, and inspire others.

Another beautiful gift that Montana has given me is the importance of ritual. Ritual is grounding and gives us purpose. It’s what our ancestors did on a regular basis and allows us to feel connected to this earth and our place here within it.

Ritual can be done anywhere, by anyone, and in any way.

When I hiked Machu Picchu last year I turned it into a spiritual journey. I used my malas to set an intention with every step. I ran the beads through my fingers and honored a loved one, said a healing affirmation, and charged them with love and purpose through every step.

MountainSplitNow it’s a ritual to use my malas in meditation when I need recharging; to cleanse them along with my crystals on the full moon; to practice 108 sun salutations at the change of every season; to place them on the top of my mat during my yoga practice.

Breaking away from technology and connecting in a more meaningful way, through ritual, is a blessing. It allows us to hear the whispers of our ancestors as we ease into the groundedness of feeling earthly, relishing the seasons, and delighting in being human.

I love the Devotion mala for this reason; it reminds me of my devotion to ritual and to the purpose we all have in this life. It also reminds me of my devotion to the dreamworld, to spirit work, to the seasons, to my ancestors, to the land where I live, to my relationship with my self, and to the source of connection that lies within us all, at our heart centers.

MachuHeadstand Let creating ritual be fun! Just like the excitement that comes from picking out the perfect mala for you, exploring meaningful rituals in your life will feel freeing, empowering, and invigorate you! Ideas are to smudge your house, pat your buddha, carry crystals with you, celebrate the full moon, all of it works. Go with what feels good!

In my opinion ritual is anything that you come back to regularly, that steps you out of your normal routine (habit) and provides a feeling of meaning, purpose, and connection. So look for inspiration and get creative in how to bring ritual into your life. It’s sort of like deepening our roots so that our branches can grow even further.

Your malas are your best ally in bringing ritual and intention into your every day. Let them connect you to the ways you want to feel, to the love and groundedness that connects us all, every time you touch, wear, and practice in them!

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: Eat the Love You Feel

tdloveHey Boho Beauties,

It’s Valentine’s day in Bohemia, and I’m prepping for a romantic evening with my favorite special someone.

I spent a week visiting my super boho sister in San Francisco last spring, and she took me to a cooking class that blew our Californian minds. It wasn’t the class or the bronzed babe who taught it that made it so unbelievable. It was the simple, secret ingredient she shared with us that changed the way I cook forever.

I love to pay it forward, so this Valentine’s day my gift to you goddesses is the gift that Californian Chef gave to me.

Step One: Be a gourmet guru with love on your brain

After my week in the valley, I started cooking with love. Let me be more specific. Every time I walked into my kitchen, I went in with love on my mind.  I chopped veggies, and remembered sweet moments I’d spent with loved ones. I pulled dense leaves from kale stems, thought about times I’d felt sparkly and considered the people or places that made me feel that way. Then, I splashed oil and seeds on top of those beautiful culinary creations and soaked up the love.

Step Two: Eat the Love You Feel

Once the chow is ready, it’s time to eat the love. The magic in preparing a dish with love on your brain is that you are literally eating the love you felt when you made it. Pretty rad! Sit down, take a breath and let the quality love and kindness sink in.

Step Three: Share the Love You Madelet love in mala

After I’ve really felt the love, my favorite thing to do is share it. Those who’ve found the deepest love know that giving means receiving, so share that love-filled grub with your best gal pal or your sweetest honey.

My sweetie just showed up, so I’m putting on my Let Love In Mala and thinking some loving thoughts. Tonight when you’re massaging kale and cutting up veg, remember the people in your life who make it easy to love.

Peace, love and Magic from Bohemia xx

Dear Namastay: You made hot yoga more Buddhaful

We are bohemian beauties who love to sweat, so you can imagine our excitement when we received our brand new NamaSTAY towel to try at hot yoga.

Namastay0003As we arrived to class and put down our mats it was love at first sight when we discovered the little sleeves that attach to the sides of our mats for extra safety and added resistance, #namastayonmymat! The NamaSTAY towel takes the slip out of yoga, so we had more time to focus on intention setting and less on sliding in crow pose. As yogi’s I am sure you can relate that when our bodies are dripping sweat  the last thing we want to worry about is adjusting our mat/towel, etc!

When peace, love and yoga are your thing a smooth practice is so important.  That’s why we love these grippy towels!

Check out these om-azing towels here:www.namastaytowel.com

What is your love language?

We love the book The 5 Love Languages! It teaches us how we all universally speak a language of love however, we all express this in a different way.

After reading the love languages we were inspired to create the Connection Collection with each mala representing a different love language.

Check out this awesome quiz to find out what your love language is and share in the comment section below:)
