Like every yogi fashionista’s fine collection of gemstones and sacred silk scarves, a girl has got to have her go-to group of gal pals to lean on. From the wild haired bestie you’ve known since you were crackling pop rocks in grade five to the golden goddess you went road tripping with in college, we’ve all got a special collection of friends who help us through the peaks and valleys of life’s journey. There are a few types of magical boho friends that a girl has just got to have by her side to fulfill all of her auspicious dreams, create a life of wonder, and live completely fearlessly.

Here are the top five gal pals you should have in your life, right now!

The Big Dreamer
She’s writing her next novel, starring on a local television show, gets up every day at 5 a.m. and she’s seriously driven. This goddess has known her sweetest goals and aspirations since she was six, and she’s worked hard to make them a reality. She’s a staple in your life because she encourages all of your life’s hopes and dreams. She’s never jealous or catty, because she’s secure in her own dreams and trusts in yours.

gDWZRLy6DD3CX_tIf4NcFzI4S-W9mo28BQwgNvv5UdQ,JuggcsiYpcnRWW2ko29oCaHb_YVDphKaypXdJe6ULlI,UwDzm8U7awnqYXjXSes8IpXJmwXkEExrqcTH1YRk-6s The Soul Sister
You met her when you were a little girl and she’s pretty much your family. You could spend months, even years apart but your spirits are connected like sisters, so it never feels like it’s been long. You’re intuitively connected—she can tell when you’re feeling blue, and she knows how to make it right. If, by chance, you didn’t meet this gal long ago, the stars aligned when you met and you knew somehow that in another life you must have danced together barefoot on a beach somewhere. This goddess is a serious gem. She is your soul sister.

 The Mama Bear
You go to her when mercury is in retrograde, you tell her all of your secrets, she’s your shoulder to cry on. This mama bear is wise beyond her years. She’s got all of the answers; from avocado cacao mousse recipes to the sacred stories of Kali, she knows it all. She’ll pick up the phone when no one else does (you’ve got her on speed dial.) She’s a special force to be reckoned with-she holds the moon up and keeps all of her besties safe.

The No Bull, A Type, Let’s Get This Done, I’m Talking Right Now, Kinda Gal
This fiery friend has your best interest at heart. She knows all of your magic and won’t take ‘can’t’ for an answer. She’ll tell you her loving, stone cold, honest truth, if she thinks it will help you achieve your highest potential. She doesn’t believe in ‘no’, and she’ll always find a way. She’s a light worker and power mama, who will have you help you to unveil anything that’s blocking you from seeing all that’s good in you.

 The Barefoot Babe
This barefoot bella is your very best friend. You take her on all of your most magical adventures, throw dance parties with her below the honeymoon, and share secrets that are never told. This babe is your bestie because there’s a childlike wonder that’s unwritten between the two of you, which will never grow old! You both know that life is for unabashed, full-out living, and you do it together with arms wide open, face a-glow.

All friends are precious, just like the sacred Malas and stones with which we adorn ourselves. These are just a few of the rare and important types of gals you should have in your life to keep it whole, auspicious and full. I know you have a friend-type that helps you to stay sane and golden, and I’d love to hear all about it in the comments below!!

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: Me, My Passport, and My Yoga Mat

8c4fadd830c30b6544ff46fae6f5245fIt’s no secret that a goddess has got to break free, bust out her passport, and hit the open road (or air) from time to time.  It’s our innate, bohemian right to see the sun kiss the sand on the shores of Kauai, snack on coconut gelato in Sorrento, and ride wild palominos through the Peruvian jungle. But there’s one small catch I know you fashionistas have all got on your brains: How do I keep up my yoga practice when I’m searching for my soul on the road? It can be tough to keep a daily practice when magical distractions are hiding behind every corner of your journey, but yoga comes in all shapes and forms, so let’s talk about some easy tricks to fuse it in where you least expect it!

Here are My Top 5 Tricks to Fuse Yoga into Your Next Boho Vacay. . .

1. Stay Open
Just because you’re not in a yoga studio with an uber toned, soft voiced yoga babe highlighting how to get your vinyasa on, doesn’t mean you can’t get into the flow. There’s so many ways to practice yoga sans the studio. Your hotel bedroom floor, the beach’s edge, or poolside, are each highly appropriate studio substitutes, and you don’t even need a mat! Just spread your fingers wide, take a deep breath and roll into your fave pose. Something else to consider is that you don’t need to practice a full-length class to receive all of the benefits. Just get intuitive with what you’re body and mind need that day and choose a few appropriate postures! For example, if you’re feeling super tight, take some hip openers like pigeon or fire log. Or if you’re stomach is aching from all the rad food you’ve been divulging in, take some twists and call it a day!

2. Sneak Off
The most magical places exist on our wildest adventures, so sneak off and find them! Go, gypsy babe, and find somewhere that really vibes with your soul. Set up your spot and start some pranayama, right there! You’ll be in awe of the seriously soulful vibrations you create when you sneak off to a secret place.

b9ab811d84ebf4906a628384058cb46c3. Get Creative
As I mentioned before, yoga can happen anywhere and you don’t need to take an entire class to reap all of the benefits! If you’re really needing a yoga fix, but can’t find some alone time, pop into a gentle baddha konasana and do a five minute yoga nidra meditation. Even this practice will untangle any stress and tell your body that it’s cool to chill out! This can be done anytime, anywhere, yogi babe!

4. Gather the Group
If you’re travelling in a group, round up the crowd, take them to a pretty spot and guide them through some of your fave poses! They’ll be sweating, giggling and super grateful—I promise! The beauty of moving and breathing with a group is indescribable, especially if your travel group is bagged from the journey.  You’ll be Zen’d out and connected to one another in a special way that you weren’t before you started your practice. Pick out some simple poses and move through them with your gal pals and fam!

5. Visualize and Set Those Intentions, Boho Babe!
Many of my greatest teachers have told me that even visualizing yourself moving through your most favourite, relaxing postures will put your heart and bod in a state of ease. If you’re really in a pinch and there’s no place to practice, pick a meaningful intention, start some pranayama (low, diaphragm breath), and move through your vinyasa in your mind.  If you have your most beautiful Mala nearby, roll your fingers over it’s beads, close your eyes and visualize yourself moving through each posture with grace!

Your sweet and soulful journey should always be met with an open heart (and relaxed bod!), boho babe 😉 Take these easy tips with you on your next adventure and remember that you’ve got all the tools that you need!

Get Moving: Why Endorphins are Cool, and How They’ll Heal Your Soul in 30 Minutes or Less!

9801fbc4d15a7fd98231b35ebce66870Let’s face it; sometimes it can be tough to get ourselves moving. Life can get busy, and every day it seems like we have less and less time to get everything done. With the busy work and social lives we try to maintain, it’s difficult to fit in a good sweat-it-out time to bring our minds and bodies back to zen. Trust me, guys, I get it.

I also get that the last thing on the planet you want to do after dealing with all of the chaos is moving your body more. We want to relax, but what we don’t realize is moving  actually activates a magical little thing that makes us happy! In fact, the activation of these things can transform any lack luster mood into superhuman strength. Those things, dear boho friends, are endorphins.

Endorphins are a relatively recent discovery. Research in the seventies attributed them to inspiring the neuro-transmitters in the brain to trigger releases of emotional calm, euphoria, and yes, even pleasure (wink, wink). These releases not only serve as a support system for the emotional being, but also aid in stimulating the central nervous system, improving the health of the brain and spinal cord. This allows our brain to interpret external stimuli with a stronger, more grounded perspective (i.e. Coping with a huge deadline at work). There are over twenty types of endorphins that help to create emotional awareness in the body, and the more active we are, the more we release!

Linked to the creation of seratonin (the “happy” hormone), endorphins are crucial to anyone looking to live a balanced, health-conscious lifestyle. The good news here is that getting them moving doesn’t take a lot of time out of that busy schedule. In fact, doctors have recommended that up to thirty minutes per day can make a huge difference in your level of health and fitness. Though that may sound daunting at first, it’s as easy as walking to work, going out for a jog with the pooch, or even dancing it up at your favourite Saturday night hot spot!

So, what are some other ways to start inspiring those excellent endorphins?

1.Play your favourite sport.

2.Enjoy an outdoor activity with a friend or loved one.

3.Go swimming at the beach, if the season and weather permit it.

For me, I love to get my heart pumping by taking in a blissful yoga class. It helps me to get the stretch I need, and serves as a heart-pumping work out that my body will thank me for. There are no bounds to the fun and exciting ways you can get your body moving, so get creative and get ready to reap the benefits of active, endorphin inducing lifestyle!

With real balance in life comes a true and perfect way to heal the soul. When the body finds a state of bliss, the mind and spirit quickly follow. You will be surprised at the wonderful changes your Being will experience with a little extra movement in your life. Trust me, boho friends, taking a little extra time per day will make a big difference in the long run. You can count on it!

Advice on Intentions from a B.C girl in a Yoga World.

Juliana1We sat down with Juliana Lavell, native of British Columbia, yoga instructor, writer for the Elephant Journal and artist, to chat about what keeps her inspired and how she sets her intentions. Here is what she had to share with our community.

What inspires me?

The sound of little birds singing in the morning, deep conscious breathing, vibrant colours on my paint brush to name a few. I have a 5 year old daughter who is like a magical absorbent sponge, she looks to me for grounded, strong and soft energy. She is a daily reminder of my own innocence and inspiration to keep coming back to my mat. Knowing it is my inward journey to wholeness that will ultimately shine sparkles of light into the lives around me.

That is the essence of my teaching and purpose in life; to continue to unravel the layers of myself, make my way back to my highest sensation of truth and ideally let my offerings come from that space. Whether it be an expression of art, cooking, breathing or teaching a yoga class. Meditation, and embracing all parts of myself, the light and the dark, and settling back into the space where I can be at peace with it all.

I host a yoga inspired art workshop called “Finding Your Inner Artist”, I often tell my students to forget about an idea of perfection and go for what resonates, whether its a shape or colour.  That is where we find our yoga or union!

My intention always roots back to loving kindness towards myself, what the yogis refer to as Ahimsa. Some days that means taking rest, some days that means acknowledging and moving through things I resist, in a pose, a relationship or something I’m procrastinating about.

My advice for the boho yogis out there? Let go of the need to seek approval from others. Be the raddest, baddest, truest expression of your authentic self. Seek teachers, friends and hobbies that resonate with you. Take opinions from others as well-intending gestures but integrate into your heart and your life only what resonates with you on a deep level. Your are the pearl making itself beautiful inside your oyster.

Stay connected with your inner compass, knowing that sometimes it is the places we resist the most in our selves and in our lives that tend to lead to the spaces of greatest growth; rich fertile ground for yourself to blossom!

juliana2My favourite Mala right now is the “Serendipity Mala” with adventurine. I love the quote “The best things in life just happen”. Be open to the universe and you will be a magnet for unforeseen opportunities to come your way.

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: Mala Break-Throughs

TDbohodailyEvery gypsy goddess, yoga fashionista and boho gal who wears a gemstone Mala knows how magical they are. Maybe you didn’t fall in love with them the first time someone told you about the 108 stoned treasures, but when you finally laid eyes on the unique beaded jewels, you knew you had to have one. They weren’t just a beautiful statement piece that enhanced your oh-so-natural stunning appearance; they helped bring out your inner beauty by pulling you back to all of the important intentions you set everyday.

I fell in love with the first Mala I adorned myself with. The African Jade Mala. It was gifted to me by a yoga teacher of mine right before I set out on journey west that would lead me to a series of big, boho girl life lessons. The Mala had a beautiful jade guru stone and dark cacao rudruksha seeds. Right before I left the studio to go West, my teacher told me that this Mala would give me strength in challenging times and the courage to follow my dreams.  I wandered west, as gypsies do, and kept The African Jade Mala close to me.

There were moments when all that I had planned for on my journey had fallen into little tiny pieces, and I wondered how I would ever pick them up again. I’d cross my fingers over the seeds of my Mala and remember my teacher when I looked at the precious jade guru stone. The Mala she’d given me was a reminder that I was always safe, even when it didn’t appear that way.

When my trip in the mountains finally came to a close, and I made it back to the summer humidity of the lake house that I call home, something remarkable happened.  July’s air was thick, and I moved heavy as I straddled bags, yoga gear and gifts to the front door. When I reached the front porch, I heard a gentle snap: 108 small beads and one beautiful jade stone danced in front of me, off of my neck and onto the sand.

“You’ve had a Mala Break Through” My instructor said, as I listened in tears.  “This is fabulous. You know what this means, darling? It means you’ve come to a new chapter! You’ve learned your lessons and you’re ready for what’s coming. Fantastic!”

whitejadeSince my first “Mala Break Through” I’ve had plenty more, and several exciting chapters in my life, each with unique intentions. Today I’m wearing a Jade Mala, but this time the White Jade Highest Potential Mala, because through all of these karmic break throughs and sweet little lessons, I’ve realized that I have bravery of a goddess to reach my highest potential (and you do, too!)

Confessions of a Boho Fashionista: Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

mirrormirror1 Hey Boho Beauties,

Last May I moved into my dream apartment. Something about it just oozed magic. It was my first time living without another person. Before I’d rented the place, which sat under oak trees and always smelled like maple syrup, I was dreading spending the summer solo.

But it didn’t take long before I realized that I’d created a sanctuary for myself. It was my own personal palace that I’d subconsciously designed in which to celebrate and support myself.  I’d unpacked plush throws, adorned the place in vanilla candles and hung flowing satin curtains. There was something sparkly about this space that was much different than any other home I’d lived in.  Every morning I rose, feeling excited about all of the synchronicities that might happen throughout the day, and late in the evenings I was inspired to write all of my greatest stories.

Friends from near and far would appear with gifts and stay late to drink wine, laugh and dance long into the night.  We would share stories of all of the places we’d been and the exciting people we’d met there.  One night in the thick of the summer, after cooking the largest fresh salmon I’d ever laid eyes on, we sat doe eyed around the stone fire.

“Your home is enchanting,” said one of my pals. “I noticed though, there’s something is missing.”

“What’s that?” I replied.

“You don’t have any mirrors,” she said, “None in the bathroom, no mirrors anywhere. What’s the deal?”

I looked around. She was right, there were no mirrors in my apartment. May had rushed into June and June shifted smoothly into July. Here we were smack dab in the middle of August and I’d not placed a mirror on any of my walls. I looked around the glow that lit up this circle of my closest friends. My gaze shifted lovingly from pal to pal: Their wide eyes, their open hearts, their curious minds.

Then it hit me: I had many mirrors.  The mirrors I’d placed around my home were much more valuable than any picture of myself in a glass reflection.  The home I’d created and the beautiful gal pals in it were the best mirrors I could have picked out.awakening

Next time you’re self-reflecting, pop on your Awakening Mala and remember that all that you have created in your life is a beautiful reflection of who you are, no mirrors required.

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: Warning! Please Do Not Feed the Fears.

TinyDevotionsGirlsHey Boho Beauties,

When I was a little girl I was afraid of pretty much everything.

Huge rainstorms would hit our city in the heat of the summer and my dad would open up the garage door to watch the light show. I’d stand fearfully under his pant legs and grip him tightly, watching water soak the cracks at the drives’ edge.

When the storm let up, worms would replace the rainfall.  I would point and squirm, then run into the house fast and far from the sight of their gross sluggish bodies.

Everything freaked my poor little blonde soul out. And I fed those fears, just like that, for a long time—until years later,  in Kelowna, B.C., when I was set to go for a steep mountain hike with a girlfriend of mine.

Her urban mountain home was rooted in the heart of West Kelowna, right below a trail called Bear Creek.  We set out that afternoon with her three dogs. They were each adopted, adorable and free-spirited in their own way, and they encouraged our small band of travellers through the thick trail.

Not long after we’d set out, a ragged old hiker crossed us at a fork we’d come to on the path. His beard was white and rough, and there were creases in the folds of his leathery temples.

“Wily pack of coyotes up there.” He said to us.

“Sorry sir?” My friend replied.

“I said, there’s a big old pack of coyotes roaming around here. You girls should head home.” He walked past us and went on.

I turned in the direction he’d gone in and started a quick sprint back to our vehicle.

“Where are you going?” My gal pal asked.

“Back home!”

She caught at my wrist, and directed me back towards our goal: Bear Creek’s highest point. My heart was racing, my sweat was breaking. This was fear at it’s finest!

We hiked and hiked, but it didn’t take us long until a warm spotlight shone through the brush and we had reached our destination.  Our five pack of fearless warriors stood confidently at the highest point of Bear Creek and we were free—no coyotes in sight! There we were, the sweetness of the wind was pouring down on us, we’d met our destination home free and we’d forgotten our fears somewhere along the path.

When I think of this victory at Bear Creek, I pop on my Amazonite Mala, which cools my fears like the wind did that day, and it always leads me back to my personal highest point. So keep going, boho beauties, wherever you’re at on your hike, until you reach your destination (and don’t stop to feed the fears!)

Bohemian Bunnie’s journey with Music + Yoga

Andrea-Whitt-Shania-Twain DSC_0906-1I vividly remember my first yoga class almost six years ago. A friend of mine took me to try Bikram Yoga on Memorial Day. The studio was packed with nearly 100 sweaty, stinky yogis, all following word for word what the instructor was saying. I couldn’t believe how each person knew exactly what to do and how the class moved so consistently as a whole. At the time I was super low on cash so I passed on joining the studio. From that experience I remember verbally setting my intentions to my friend who took me to my first yoga class. I specifically stated that I wanted my life to be so that I could afford to go to yoga class any day that I wanted, write and perform music as I pleased and create art as part of my career as well.

A few months after attending that inaugural class, I saved up enough cash to purchase a three-month package of unlimited yoga. I used the hell out of that subscription series! Looking back, attending class 5-6 days a week for the first 5 months was the absolute BEST thing I could have done to jump my practice to the next level. Currently I attend class 2 days a week (I also see a trainer once a week) and I’m still becoming more limber and stronger class by class. I’ve been encouraged by so many teachers to enter a yoga competition (seems like an oxymoron…but really just and excuse to work hard and challenge yourself) maybe this year will be it!

Off the mat I’m a professional musician, artist and blogger. When I’m not living in sunny Los Angeles, I tour with Shania Twain. I’m inspired by musicians who stand out from the crowd, perform music that is true to themselves, and work hard to get where they are. Shania definitely falls into this category. Kacey Musgraves is a recent favorite; I’m also a big fan of Phish and Stevie Nicks.

Ellie-fitness-bon-voyage22Ellie-fitness-bon-voyage-newI’m always working at becoming better at whatever I’m involved in. I absolutely love the journey! I perform with huge musical acts but I still strive to practice 3 hours a day just to be a better musician. It’s that never ending drive to learn that gets me excited to wake up every day.

My favorite Tiny Devotions mala would have to be the African Jade mala. The description is dreams, friendship, luck and strength. I always have big dreams, I love making friendships along the way and I have to constantly remind myself to stay strong despite any obstacles. The entertainment business is cut throat and I feel very lucky and humbled to be where I am.

Confessions from a Boho Fashionista: My Top 3 Spring Must-Haves

Topspringmusthavetinydevotions

Hey Boho Beauties,

After ballet last week, a girlfriend of mine commented on the super soft, hot pink tights I’d worn to our power plié class.

“Those tights are unreal. You’ve got everything I want—I just can’t keep up,” she told me.  “How do you do it?”

We’d been stretching and twirling at this studio together for months now, and I’d never noticed she felt that way.

What she said sat with me for a while after I left, and it wasn’t until I hit the dark and leafies in the Whole Food’s produce section that it came to me. I DO have everything I want, but the pink tights had nothing to do with it.

I grabbed my kale and baby bok-choy, bee lined it to the cash and tried to hurry out of there to call my gal pal.

The line was thick at the till to pay, so my eyes scanned over the cash out’s trashy magazines. Their covers flashed the latest scandals, slim down tricks and ‘Spring Must-Haves’.

“Spring Must-Haves,” I thought to myself.  I paused and thought of my hot pink tights, having it all and my own personal Spring Must-Haves.

As soon as the cashier handed me my bags, I dialed up my girlfriend and spilled my personal Spring Must-Haves to her.

Here’s a hint: Must-Haves aren’t about having everything!

My Top 3 Spring Must-Haves

1.Child-Like Curiosity

Do you remember being little and dancing under the trees? Letting your head fall dangerously far back on the merry-go-round and eating so many pop rocks that your tongue went blue? It was a time when your dreams had no limits, and anything was possible.  Guess what? That time is still here! My Top Spring Must-Have is the memory of that child-like time, and ‘acting as if’. No matter what you’re wearing, or who you are with, that feeling is your greatest accessory.

2. A Warm Cup of Lemon Tea

This Must-Have is best used in the morning, before you’ve consumed anything else.  A warm cup of lemon tea or water soothes your internal organs and your soul. The best way to serve others is to first serve yourself. So start your day off right by cleaning your pipes and preparing your body for a sparkly day! You can drink detoxifying lemon tea at any time of the day to make your skin glow, help you sleep soundly and maintain inner and outer peace.

3. My Favorite Mala

tiny-devotions-mala-beads-awakening-malas-sandalwood-white-jade_large

As the seasons change, so too do our intentions. This is why keeping your favorite mala close to your heart is important for remembering meaningful dreams and intentions. I’m wearing my Awakening Mala as we move into spring to expand my dreams, dance like no one is watching and awaken all of the potential that lives within me.

Go grab your favorite mala, Boho bellas, and take some time to consider your own special Spring Must-Haves.

Peace, Love and Magic from Bohemia xx
